Ingredients
You only need simple ingredients for this blackberry strawberry banana smoothie recipe, this is what you'll need:
Fruit - we use blackberries, strawberries and bananas in this smoothie, all can be picked or bought fresh. We do recommend freezing the berries though and the banana can be as ripe as you like, the smoothie will just get sweeter the more ripe it is. You can use pre-frozen fruit out of season!
Nut butter - you'll love the creaminess and extra protein the cashew butter adds to this smoothie. You can use whichever nut butter you like though, almond is another great option.
Almond extract - we use a touch of almond extract, it works perfectly with the blackberries in this smoothie. You can leave it out, but we think you'll regret it.
Milk - we use dairy milk, but to make this dairy free or vegan you can use almond, oat or soya milk if you prefer.
Customisations
We know you love to mix things up with customisations and substitutions so here are some of our recommendations for strawberry blackberry banana smoothie recipe:
Vegan - simply switch out the dairy milk with your favourite alternative to make this vegan.
Nut butter - although we use cashew butter, you can easily use any other nut butter you like. Or if you have a nut allergy and prefer to use tahini you can do so, we think that would be delicious!
Extra protein - you can add in some ground flax seeds to the smoothie to add extra protein and fibre if you wish.
Spices - you can add in some cinnamon to give this smoothie a bit more of a fall feeling.
Equipment to use
Here are some suggestions of equipment to use for your smoothie endeavours:
Blender - we recommend a high powered blender such as a Vitamix, it'll make short work of anything frozen without overheating or warming up your smoothie.
Bullet - you can alternatively use a smoothie maker or a Nutribullet if that's what you have, it'll still work just as well and conveniently comes with a drinking cup too.

Expert tips
Make sure to read and follow these expert tips to ensure complete success with this smoothie recipe:
Frozen fruit - using frozen fruit is best as it gives a thick smoothie without compromising on flavour. If you have freshly picked or bought fruit, freeze them first.
Fresh fruit - if you wish to use fresh fruit only, add in a handful of ice to chill and give you a thicker smoothie. However, the ice tends to dilute flavour a bit. You could also try adding some frozen cauliflower if you have any on hand which will cool your smoothie without diluting it or adding any extra flavour. You might need to add a little extra milk though.
Wet ingredients - Add the wet ingredients in to the blender jug first, it'll make it easier for the blender to get started.
Blackberries - if you've picked your blackberries fresh, soak them in a bowl of water for 15-20 minutes to help remove the bugs and critters. Pat dry with a paper towel and then freeze.
Prep ahead - prepare your fruit into individual packs and store in the freezer for use whenever you are ready. You may need a touch more milk if you include the banana in the frozen fruit too.
Recipe FAQs
We normally don't have any leftovers as the recipe makes enough for a portion or multiples of. However, if you don't fancy finishing your smoothie you can do a few things:
Ice cube tray - simply pour any smoothie left into an ice cube tray and freeze for future use. Just defrost and re blend when you wish to drink it or add to another smoothie when you don't have any frozen fruit.
Ice lolly moulds - fancy a lighter popsicle? Pour your smoothie into lolly moulds and freeze for an alternative frozen treat.
Fridge - the smoothie will last for 24 hours in the fridge, just re-blend when you wish to drink it.
No food is good or bad, there are only foods that are nutrient dense and those that are less so. Whether you apply a label of morality against a specific food or not, food is a complex and nuanced topic. We also don't eat individual nutrients. Smoothies are complex and full of nutrient dense foods which contribute towards a balanced diet. Plus, fruit is wonderful! Enjoy!
