    Why you'll love this recipe

If you need more reasons to make this smoothie here you are:

Healthy - with nutrient dense ingredients, this smoothie is a great way to get started in the morning. It has everything you need for a balanced breakfast or snack

Quick - as with all smoothies, you only need a few ingredients and a good blender, for a super quick blend.

Fibre - smoothies retain the fibre that helps in digesting the goodness that comes with it. If you want even more fibre, add some oats or ground flax seeds.

Protein - with cashew butter and greek yoghurt this smoothie is filled with protein making it very satisfying.

    Ingredients

You only need some very simple ingredients for this strawberry blueberry smoothie, here's what youโ€™ll need:

Ingredients in various bowls for the strawberry blueberry smoothie.

Banana - We recommend using room temperature banana which makes everything easier to blend. If you donโ€™t like banana see the customisations below.

Frozen fruit - youโ€™ll need frozen strawberries and blueberries for this smoothie. The freezer gives us access to out of season berries, frozen at their peak.

Greek yoghurt - this adds a lovely creaminess, slight tang and natural sweetness from the milk sugars. It also adds a good dose of filling protein to the smoothie.

Cashew butter - our secret ingredient, this nut butter adds incredible flavour to the smoothie while still letting the fruit shine. Itโ€™s not overpowering like some other nut butters either, but adds a wonderful harmony of creaminess and nutty notes. (Check out how to make cashew butter.)

    Customisations and variations

This strawberry blueberry smoothie is delicious as it is but here are some suggestions on how you can adapt it.

Dairy - dairy is a wonderful product, especially when produced ethically and in a regenerative system. If you're lactose intolerant or otherwise inclined you can simply substitute for a dairy free milk and yoghurt of choice.

Banana - if you are averse to bananas you can use cooked sweet potato, cauliflower or even an apple or pear. Add a touch of maple syrup if you find it isn't sweet enough with these substitutions.

Flavourings - you can add a different extract in the smoothie if you like. Weโ€™d recommend a touch of almond extract. You can also add in some spices, such as cinnamon, or a grating of lemon or orange zest.

Nut butter - you can switch it out the cashew butter with almond or peanut butter or your favourite nut butter. This is how to make it - how to make cashew butter - it's super easy!

Protein - Cashew butter and Greek yoghurt add protein already. But if you want even more protein you can add a scoop of your protein powder of choice. Add more milk to thin if necessary.

How to make strawberry blueberry smoothie

Follow this simple two step guide to create your next favourite power smoothie for breakfast:

Process steps of before and after blending the smoothie in a blender jug.
    1. Place all the smoothie ingredients in the blender jug.
    2. Blend on high power until the smoothie is completely smooth. Itโ€™s that easy!

    Expert tips and tricks

Here are some tips and tricks to help you to create your strawberry blueberry smoothie.

Banana - we recommend using a room temperature banana as with too much frozen fruit the smoothie becomes very thick. Unless you have a high powered blender, you might find that it becomes difficult to blend otherwise.

Nut butter - most blenders are cleaned by blending some water with dish soap afterwards. When using nut butter, place it centrally in the blender so it doesnโ€™t stick to the sides to aid cleaning. Adding nut butters also adds protein, which to us, makes the smoothie more filling and satisfying.

Blueberries - weโ€™ve tried this recipe with fresh blueberries instead of frozen. We found that if the smoothie sits for a few minutes, it will start to firm up and set. We believe this is due to the pectin in the berries. It isnโ€™t an issue, itโ€™s just thicker to drink. Frozen blueberries don't have the same effect.

What blender to use for smoothies

Vitamix - we recently got ourselves a new blender as we put our previous one through its paces. We highly recommend a Vitamix. They are super powerful and make short work of anything that you need to blend.

Ninja blender - for a cheaper but just as reliable option for a blender, we recommend a Ninja blender. A great option as it comes with a jug and a smoothie cup too.

Food processor - if you don't have a blender but do have a food processor, you could use it instead. We recommend a Magimix and using the soup blending attachment to make it as smooth as possible. This method won't yield the same results as using a blender.

    Recipe FAQs

Can I make this with fruit juice or water?

Yes you can, it will however have a completely different flavour than intended. You can substitute the milk directly for orange juice or with water, or you could even use coconut water.

    Can I store this smoothie?

We wouldnโ€™t recommend making this smoothie ahead and instead recommend that you enjoy immediately after making it. However, you could make some smoothie packs in preparation if you wanted to get ahead: simply measure out the frozen fruit and banana into a freezer bag and keep in the freezer in individual packs until ready to blend. Then simply add the remaining ingredients, blend and enjoy!

If you do need to store the smoothie after blending, store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a day and ensure you give it a quick re-blend before consuming.

    Notes

    • We recommend using a room temperature banana.
    • Feel free to switch out the nut butter you have, cashew butter does make it extra creamy though.
    • If you want a super thick smoothie, weโ€™d recommend using a frozen banana along with the frozen berries or you can add in some ice cubes to the mix. The other alternative is to add in a few tablespoons of oats.ย
